Defining Data Collection Methods

What methods should we look at?

There are a number of textbooks are dedicated to teaching people have a carry out research using a variety of methods. What we are talking about here, are techniques that you use to actually collect your data not the broad methodologies that might be used.

One issue that the evaluator who is just entering this area must face is the variety of names given to methods and the way some are tied to the methodological ideologies that writers adhere to. What we are trying to here is to give the common generic title for a data collection method. You may need to apply some lateral thinking when you come to look at specific texts and manuals.

The material referenced below is an attempt to give a general picture of the various data collection methods. You are advised to go to one of the textbooks for more detailed information on any given technique.

Some of the methods discussed below require specific skills if you are to validly and reliably collect data. We suggest that, if you are interested in developing your educational evaluation skills, you look to sitting in on some undergraduate subjects in educational, sociological or psychological methods.
