Qualitative Evaluations

 

Basic qualitative options

Qualitative evaluations can be based upon many different types of models. In this area we will provide a limited set of approaches that will proved effective for staff.

General open-ended questions

This option is based upon defining some open ended questions that encourage content from students. It can be used in a summative or formative mode or it can be seen as a process evaluation.

High-Low Point

The High-Low point approach to qualitative evaluation is derived from critical inident thinking where we want to know if there are significant happenings that are influencing the students view of the program or unit. It is basically a process-based evaluation procedure where the distinction between formative and summative is blurred.

Activity Diary

The activity diary is an approach that utilises the general value of the self-report diary to explore what has happened in a program or unit. It can vary in its level of structure and in its implenetation time line.
